1770 - Trading Begun in the Dakotas


Trading begun with Spanish and French merchants from St. Louis on the Upper Missouri River.

1785 - Pierre Doran


Pierre Doran settle on the Missouri River in 1785 with his Yankton wife and started trading with the Ihunktonias tribes in the area.

1720 - TaMakoce-His Land-Oglala


The Oglalas had a battle with the Omaha and a warrior named TaMakoce-His Land contested his people with who owned the war prise taken in battle. The disagreement caused TaMakoce-His Land and his people to break away from the Oglala band and move north. He formed what is today called the Hunkpapas.

1761 - Hunkpapa and Sihasapa


The Hunkpapa and Sihasapa camped with the Ihunktonwan band a long the James River during this time their were many intermarried with each other.

1763 - Hunka with Cheyenne


The Cheyenne and the New band who became the Hunkpapa had a hunka (adoption) ceremony where they adopted each other. The first record of a nation to nation adoptions.

1768 - Civil War


The Hunkpapa, Cheyenne, Sihasapa and Yanktonais attacked the Oglalas and Burles. This was first recorded civil war among the Lakota people. The Hunkpapa, Cheyenne, Sihasapa and Yanktonais took Oglala and Burles wives

1787 - Joseph Garreau


Garreau was a french man that settled with the Ree at the mouth of the Grand River.

1450 - No Intestines and Red Scout


1450 Crow leaders No Intestines and Red Scout fast and receive vision at Spirit Lake (Devils Lake, ND). Two leaders separate, with their followers. No Intestines searches for sacred tobacco and finally settles in southeastern Montana and becomes known as Ashala/Many Lodges (Mountain Crow). Red Scout and his people settle on Missouri River and become sedentary agrarian farmers known as Hidatsa.

1770 - Jacques d'Eglise came to the Dakotas


Jacques d'Eglise, a Spanish trader, came to the Missouri River Region by way of Missouri Country.
