Although I am an enrolled member of Standing Rock Sioux Tribe I do not know my family on this reservation. My mother Elsie Rosetta Gayton deceased in 1994 was relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California back in the 1950s. My sisters Rebecca Roberta and Rafaela and I were all born either in Sacramento or San Francisco CA. We inherited our fractional interest in land there from our mother. We are related to the Gaytons and Bullheads. Also Red Earth Nation and Mrs. Red Earth Nation. I currently am employed with the Pacific Region of the Bureau of Indian Affairs here in Sacramento CA. But since I am in my 60s I am looking forward to retirement and would like to travel to Standing Rock like my mother did around my age. If any of my relatives would like to contact me that would be a joyous blessing. May God bless and keep your families warm safe and happy.

I do believe my great great grandfather is on the rations list for Standing Rock in 1885. His name was Anpetu Wakan he later ended up on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. Thank you for posting this document as I would never have found it myself it helps me in tracing my native ancestors as they were forceably moved across the Sioux nation and eventually onto Reservations.

I ran across Tony Hale in the VA system and he always encouraged me to go see an elder at Standing Rock. By this time I have forgotten is name but would there be such an elder confined to a wheelchair with white snowy hair and a blanket with blue stars.

My Grandmother told me before she died that her Grandmother was full blooded Indian and that her mother was half white and half Indian. The tribe that was settled by the Kanawha River near Canneltonthat is close to Montgomery WV. They were moved to a reservation but her grandmother married a white man and settled in Fayette County and the story goes on from there. I wanted to know if this group was from the Sioux Tribe. After learning my greatgreat grandmother married a Cherokee chief and it hurts me to know that our people were treated so cruelly. To learn that there were treatys though very few were for our people. But still they stole our landkilled our peopleand made them the people they were after filling them with boozeand gave them guns but never paid them what they were told they would receive. I have read so many sad stories it hurts but I have been trying to get this country to straighten out the wrongs they have done. Sunday March 27 th an article came out in our paper. The United States apologized to the indians for their wrong doings...at least this is a start for nowbut the wild animals favored our people are disappearing ex. the wild stallionsdeersbuffalo are still being slaughtered and the land of our family are being destroyed. There will soon not be anything for our children. This article was very interesting and a piece I will have with me the day I go to the Great Spirit above. Thank you for taking time to search this and put it down for all to read. Please learn more as Iam doing every day and will continue to do.

My first online visit. I am doing a small bit of research. I was just unpacking a bag destined for the trash when I came across an original photo which is in good shape labeled John Sitting Bull and Black Be...label torn away.. and Lacota Souix 1261926 I think. At first I swore it was the Great Chief Sitting Bull as the appearance was so much like his but I thought 1926 was a bit to receint to be him. I have since found Mr. John Sitting Bull passed about 1954 I want to do some more research and welcome information on the subject. Dtravis2@optonline.net

Hello everyone I am a Dakota grandmother enrolled at Fort Peck Assiniboine Sioux Tribes of Montana. I presently live in the twin cities here in our beloved homeland of Minnesota. We have a Dakota Conference going on October 13 2010. Many of our relatives are finding out who their relatives are and some have met them. We discuss alot issues pertaining to the removal of our people back in the 1800s and what we want today for our people. If you are interested in attending this free Conference you can contact me by email. We have different presenters at each conference to share with our people the stories treaties traumas and genocides that have happened to us. Because this our homeland we offer with great respect your presence. This is for you. Thanks Alameda

Greetings Many of my immediate family members mother aunts grandfather are registered with Standing Rock...they are Sihasapa sioux. I was hoping that someone out there could help me. I am currently studying abroad in Scotland at the University of Aberdeen and am writing my dissertation for my MLitt in History and I am in dire need of primary documents from the Indian side of things i.e. written down oral histories personal letters correspondence between individuals and the government etc from about 1850 onwards. Does anybody out there know where I could find some of these primary documents Or better yet does anybody have any family docs that theyd be willing to copy/send/email to me I would be very appreciative and would duly thank you in my paper If anybody can help please email me at mreinmn@yahoo.com. Thank you

What a beautiful website and filled with power and wisdom. I would love to learn more and at present I am reading two books both by Kent Nerburn. I have an affinity for the native american culture and collect vintage photographs pottery silver music and beadwork. And as Sitting Bull statedIf you lose something important to you go back and search for it and you will find it. I think I found it.

Dear Standing Rock nation. I had the priviledge and honor of meeting the last chief of the hunkpapa nation. Chief KEVIN LOCKE.Although our meeting was brief he told us he had to return home to gather food and medicine for winter was coming. It is sad that there is no men left on your reservation for he has to work that much harder in the fall. I am sending another donation to Chief Kevin Locke so he can dig another well so your people will have adequete water supply. Havig another well will help with the sickly children. I will keep your people in my prayers at our sundance in BerlinGermany where we keep the spirit bundle that was given by Mr. Mark Dog Eagle. I would like to commend you on your work; I strongly believe in the teachings of Native Americans and their message of strength, fairness, loyalty, love of the earth and animals. Kindest Regards, KJ.

Hello, I need to know if I am part of your tribe. I was informed by my mother on christmas day 06 that she had been keeping a thirty three year secrect from me. She informed me that my father's real name was Joseph Timothy Hasley. She kept it a secret from me because she feared her mother. Once I found out about this I immediatly began to search for him. I did find him but unfortunatly he passed away months after I was born in 1974. My mother told me that he had a mother named Josephine Hasley who remarried and took tha last name of Copeland. Now I have reached a dead end. I really would like to find relatives that are still living. I would also love the chance to show my three children thier true heritage. Thank you Charles Lee Phillips (Hasley)

I have been on an incredible journey of self-discovery these past several years. That journey was made richer earlier this year when I met Itazipa Hanska, or Longbow, who was born and raised at Standing Rock. We speak to each other several times each week by phone (he is staying in Maine) and I feel very connected to him and his people. I am planning to travel in 2007 to South Dakota, to spend time meeting and speaking with the people at Standing Rock and Pine Ridge, and to share in the spitit at your annual Pow-Wow.

I checked this out last year sometime, so i had to find it again. i'm glad i did. i saw that my brother lyle from alaska checked it out. i haven't ever met him, i was raised by my auntie rose anne and uncle jim boyd in poplar, montana since i was 3 months old. they were my mom and dad. what a different type of culture it is between fort peck and standing rock reservations, both having great teaching of who we are. i'd love to find a cool chat room. give my love to all my relations. i did make it to the powwow that summer, it was so awesome even if i was colder than a hookers heart. haha

Hau Kola, Hope I got that right! Wonderful website, wonderful people. And I say that having never met a Lakota individual! However, since childhood, I have always had a deep affinity with Native American people and their culture, especially the Lakota, even though I am English. Although I have seen the film, I didn't need "Dances With Wolves" to tell me what wonderful people the Lakota were. I have read so much about the Lakota and visited their websites - a magnificent and illuminating journey in every sense! I simply have to make another journey, and that is to your homeland. Lord knows when that will be, but it has to be done! Until then, bless you all, Lakota people. I am not a religious man, far from it, but bless you all. Oh, and if anyone wishes to contact me, then it would be wonderful to hear from you. And I would be delighted to maintain contact too! As I said, bless you all Shane Beaver from Derbyshire, England

Nice site. I enjoyed the history, would like to see more maps, and am intrugued by the stone commemorating Sacakwea's burial. I have heard of others claiming that she came to live with them, such as the Cheyenne. Do you know for sure that it was her that is buried there? Also, there must be a way to know for sure if Sitting Bull's remains definitely were removed from the first burial to the second. What do the Standing Rock Res inhabitants do for a living? The Navajo have great farming organizations and ranches with a very sophisticated economical growth plan. Thanks. Good site, spent hours reading everything. Am intrigued with the plea for members of the tribes to contribute to the history of the culture, especially that of women. Good point! I will keep checking back to see if anyone has more to tell.

I would love to come and visit during a pow wow. I am not into the casino thing though but rather experiencing and teaching my son&daughter of Native American History and culture. My son is a small part Native American and very proud of it, myself; maybe in my prior life (I do believe this) I often felt my birthday was a sad day in history. It is December 29th and I found out why I always had this inkling sence a young age after reading about the slaughter of Wounded Knee. I would love more info to come and visit this summer with my children.

What a strong brave people!!! From what I have learned reading history books up to today, I am so proud that the Lakota are part of the greater whole we call the USA. During my two tours overseas and when troubles arrived I would do my duty. And, while doing it, I thought of the mighty Lakota warriors, past and present, and ensured I emulated their bravery. Stand tall and proud and wear your history with pride!!!!

Thank you La Donna Brave Bull for this wonderful piece of work,I try to teach my last Child about ours ways, I believe that chariety "begins at home" we {here} are a long way from our Native home, but as we learn together here in this home of ours the positive things about all ways and "culters" we become "spiritually strong" and that is the strength that will get us through the storms of life. We as Lakota can and have only lost so much, but the rest is up to us. We need to kno that there are material things we learn to take care of and there are spiritual things that no one can take, let us find these things and instill them into our childrens heads and hearts. Thank you again and keep up the good work.

Greetings to all. This is very interesting (and informative) website. I lived in both Fort Yates and Selfridge for a time in my youth (during the early 90's) learning to both appreciate and respect Native American culture. That appreciation never left as I recently attended a pow-wow outside of Baltimore, MD. I'm hoping to find someone I knew back then and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me. His name is Thomas (or Tommy) Vivier. If anyone knows him, could you please let me know at rhythmandbluesix@yahoo.com? Thanks.

Hi I'm a First Nations man from southwestern Ontario in Canada. Recently a T.V commercial aired here for a line of products called Lakota, which are supposed to be herbal remedies taken from Native sources. I e-mailed the company because one of the commercials had non natives wearing war bonnets, I felt this was portraying Natives in a stereotypical manner. The company stated that their products were made with a Rick Stewart a Metis Cree from Canada in conjunction with people from your reserve. I was wondering if any of this is true. thanks for your time

Hello! My name is Wendy or Windy if you prefer. I am 15th generation of Pocahontas. And I am proud of it. Her mother was from Mattaponi Tribe and father was Chief Wahunsnacock of the Pamunkey Tribe. I descend from Pocahontas through my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas J. Cross and I have a year 1850 photo of his wife, Eliza Edwards who also looked Indian. Her tribe is unknown but it has been confirmed that her uncle married the relative of Cherokee Indian Chief Bushyhead. My ex husband was Cheyenne River Sioux and Oglala Sioux. My Mother's nephew is enrolled Oglala Sioux and direct descendant of Sitting Bull. In the fall of 1983, I also had the honor of meeting my subteacher, Beatrice Medicine (Yankton Sioux from Wakpala) at CSUN in Calif during my freshman year (I am deaf) Don't know if she still remember me. Hope she reads my message here!

I am so proud to be a Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Member! Even though I now reside with my new family here on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation, I still have Standing Rock Emblem sticker hanging in my back window of my car, and just always tell everyone, "No, I'm not from here, I'm from Standing Rock!" So yeah, it's such a beautiful place, I'm glad I was raised there the first 10 years of my life, and I still go back to Fort Yates to visit my family at least 3 times a year.

I'm looking for information. In the year 1964 I and my adopted Indian brother, Willie Dogg (Farrell), were honorably discharged from the U.S.Air Force and went back to Bullhead on the Standing Rock Reservation. We danced at many honor dances given for us. I was adopted into the Sioux tribe by Willie's Mom, Florence Dogg (Ferrell) at a VFW honor dance at Little Eagle. She donated a calf to the tribe in my honor. All of the adults I knew of passed away. My Mom (Florence Dogg)gave me Willie,s Indian name, Little Warrior, when he died and before she passed away. Does anyone have any knowledge of my Indian family or relatives? brownife@netscape.com

I enjoyed looking at your site. It is important to preserve tradition and teach it to our children. As a medicine man, I teach the traditional ways to those that are interested. Where I live, I am keeper of "metlpeyotepetl", "hill of the peyote and agave", a sacred place. Many of our brothers and sisters from the north come down here for the medicine. About forty years ago I had the pleasure to visit your lands. They were beautiful. I will say a prayer and tie a chord upon the sacred tree for your people next week when I am on the hill. You can send me your prayer requests at www.gloriosoproducts.com a fellow brother, Coyotl Cuica Cuitlahac(coyote that sings the song of the desert, aka, Tony Ramirez

I lived in McLaughlin with my (then)husband from 1975-1980. He was a teacher at McLaughlin High School and later at Standing Rock Community College at Fort Yates (Garry Mowery). I saw so many wonderful things and my eyes were opened to much more of nature than I otherwise would ever have appreciated as a result of having shared your communities. Your goal of preservation is being achieved and the photographs are wonderful. Thank you for allowing me a trip back in my own time, as well as some history of this great nation we share.
